Hidden City in Chichen Itza
This fragment of history, until now inaccessible to the public, is preparing to open its doors on September 2, thanks to an initiative of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).
The entrance to this sacred enclosure is through a stone wall, crowned by a Mayan arch that evokes the open mouth of a serpent, transporting visitors to a world lost in time.
Experts in the field suggest that this place, in its heyday, was home to the cream of Mayan society. During sacred ceremonies, the leaders, warriors and priests of the time went to the iconic places that would later be built, such as the Kukulcán Castle or the Ball Court.
Francisco Osorio, in charge of the archaeological zone of Chichen Itza, points out that the first traces of architecture that show the beginnings of the city go back to what is known as the late classic period, between the years 600 and 800 AD.
Inside this enigmatic Mayan city, a stele known as “The Foundational Stone” was found. This stone, precisely dated to July 28, 878, is of particular importance, since, according to INAH archaeologist Abimael Kú Pérez, it was used as a sacrificial altar where the heart of the victim was extracted.
