But is Chichen Itza the only archaeological destination in Mexico that draws crowds?
The reality is that, although domestic tourism experienced a 40.9% drop, going from 721,033 visitors in 2022 to 426,114 in 2023, international tourism remained practically stable, with 669,822 visitors in 2022 and 661,452 in 2023, that is, only one 1.2% less.
In addition, the national visits generated a considerable economic injection of 99,387,000 pesos, given that the entrance to this historic site is 337 pesos per person.
Chichen Itza is undoubtedly one of the pillars of archaeological tourism in Mexico, but it is not the only one. Other hidden treasures of the Yucatan Peninsula, such as Tulum, Uxmal, Ek Balam and Chacchoben, also offer unique and intriguing views of the ancient Mayan civilization.
